What the app stores, and where
- Your notes are the Markdown files in your own folders. Notebook reads and writes them in
place. Pictures and files you add to a note go into a hidden
.assetsfolder next to it. - The folders you add as locations are remembered on your device, with the permission to open them again. On iPhone and iPad, notes you keep on the device are in Notebook's own folder, which the Files app shows under On My iPhone › Notebook.
- Favourites, recently opened files, the folders open in the sidebar and your settings (typeface, text size, what the sidebar shows, the notebook on the app icon) stay in the app's preferences on your device.
- The search index of file names, note text and PDF text is kept in memory only and built again at every launch.
Deleting the app removes everything it stored. Your notes are your files and stay where they are, except notes kept on an iPhone or iPad in Notebook's own folder, which the system deletes with the app.
Camera and photos on iPhone and iPad
- The camera is used only when you take a photo or scan a document into a note, and only after you have allowed it. The picture is saved next to the note, like any other.
- Photos are chosen in the system's photo picker. Notebook receives only the pictures you pick and has no access to the rest of your library.
What the app sends, and to whom
- Nothing. Notebook contains no code that connects to the internet. Pictures in notes that point to a web address are not downloaded; Notebook shows the address instead.
- When you click or tap a web link in a note, your browser opens it.
- If your notes are in iCloud Drive, Apple syncs them as it syncs every other file there. Notebook asks the system to download notes that aren't on your device yet, so it can show and search them. What Apple does with iCloud Drive is described in Apple's privacy policy.

When you write
If you send an email, your address and message are used only to answer you (Art. 6(1)(b) and (f) GDPR) and are deleted when the conversation is over, unless the law requires keeping them longer. Issues you open on GitHub are public there, under GitHub's own terms.
